The Cumberland Empowerment Zone Corporation was a partner and financial supporter of the City of Vineland’s Community School Project. The City was a successful applicant to New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (NJSCC) and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA) to become one of six Demonstration Projects for the construction of a Community School. These schools incorporate community design features (ex., a school gymnasium, playground or library accessible to both school district students and community residents) along with traditional education space. The Vineland Community School was constructed in the heart of the Downtown Vineland Empowerment Zone, in a neighborhood plagued with drug dealers and vagrants. The Cumberland Empowerment Zone Corporation, Tri-County Community Action Agency and Joseph Jingoli & Sons, Inc. were re-developers for this important project. The CEZC also committed funds for the community features of the project, which provide services to an underserved Empowerment Zone neighborhood. The community school project is a key component in the revitalization efforts for the Vineland Empowerment Zone census tracts.
